UCLA Magazine, Premier Issue

DataPlex engineers were hired by a small, fledgling company known as “3D Systems” that had a lab curiosity that they needed to turn into a product.  DataPlex principals Harry Tarnoff, Warren Juran, Stuart Spence, Richard Harlow and David Remba all contributed to getting 3D Systems’ initial “stereolithography” products designed, built and out into the hands of customers, customers which were the first of what are now known as the “rapid prototyping” and “3D printing” markets.  Read all about it here.

As part of the design effort, it was DataPlex CEO Harry Tarnoff that, against many odds, pushed stereolithography for medical applications.  The result was the use of CAT scans to build models of human anatomy, get more accurate medical results while at the same time reducing the need for surgery. The premier issue of UCLA Magazine featured one such medical application:

The caption for the cover read as follows:

Computer generated, three-dimensional models developed by N.J. Mankovich, Ph.D., UCLA Radiology, surround Thomas Faraguna, whose fractured skull was replaced by a prosthesis designed with the aid of such tools… As example of tomorrow’s high-tech, whereby an exact duplicate of a patient’s bone is created by computer-guided laser, thus insuring an exact prothesis fit before surgery.

iPhone Development

DataPlex plans to offer some if its classic products for the Apple iPhone and iTouch. Over the past twenty years, DataPlex has provided a number of useful applications for mobile computing including Time Tracker, Mileage Logger, To Do List, Query Tool, and Easy Data Manager. While DataPlex’s exact offerings are still under wraps, long-time users of DataPlex DataKeepers (a custom handheld device built by DataPlex in the 1980′s and 1990′s) can expect the same high level of useful features and reliability.

MRI M-20 Proof-of-Concept Complete

DataPlex has completed the proof-of-concept for Measurement Research, Inc.’s M-20 Industrial Tester electronics. The proof-of-concept included demonstrating simultaneous control of multiple axis of motion and the adaption of existing electronics to minimize new development cost. DataPlex’s next step is to firm up the production specifications, lay out a new circuit board and build some intial units for long-term testing and evaluation.

DataPlex’s Designs a 4K Image Sensor

DataPlex engineers have completed the design of a 4,096 by 2,304 pixelset image sensor for high-speed photography and digital cinematography. The new sensor boasts two major advances. First, true three-color separation is achieved by using DataPlex’s novel “pixelsets” instead of pixels, eliminating the need to subsample colors and providing billiant clarity.

Second, DataPlex has invented a unique method for incorporating field programmable gate array (FPGA) technology directly onto the sensor chip to optimize the offloading of captured image data to CPUs and storage devices. This feature eliminates the need for an image data processing circuit board, reducing cost and speeding OEM product delivery to market.

DataPlex revamps PrefixSuffix.com

DataPlex enhanced PrefixSuffix.com, a major online English language reference site. DataPlex engineers added clear navigation, engaging content and revenue generating ads, converted a static word root list to a MySQL database, then greatly expanded it, while adding some “sticky” educational games.

These enhancement were designed to make the site more attractive to more visitors and to keep visitors on the site longer. One week after going live with the improvements, PrefixSuffix.com experienced a four-fold increase in traffic and and twelve-fold increase in revenue.

DataPlex to Develop Electronics for MRI’s M-20 Industrial Tester

DataPlex has been selected by Measurement Research, Inc. (MRI) to develop the realtime control electronics for MRI’s new M-20 Industrial Tester.  The M-20 electronics will receive sensor data and control several mechanical assemblies positionally driven by different types of motors.  DataPlex will design the custom electronics, develop the firmware and Windows application, and also manufacture the M-20 circuit boards.  DataPlex had previously developed and manufactured electronics for MRI’s M-10 and M-15 product lines of Industrial Torque Testers.

DataPlex Creates Wireless Buttons for NBC’s Singing Bee

Through its client CBS Electronics, DataPlex quickly created the wireless button system used for contestant tie-breaking in NBC’s hit game show, Singing Bee.  The system’s buttons transmit on independent frequencies and their receivers feed a contestant “first to respond” circuit.  For heightened reliability and security, the frequencies adjust, transmitted digital signatures are verified, and multiple receivers increase the system’s range and eliminate RF dropouts.

DataPlex Engineers Custom System for Reader’s Digest

For the second straight year, DataPlex, through its client Quick Tally Interactive Systems, provided a custom-engineered voting system for the Reader’s Digest nationwide Word Power Challenge.  In this contest, students compete for $50,000 in college scholarships. The show stars Al Roker as the host and will air on NBC in June, 2007.
