Like software, hardware is also fast evolving, however significant technical advances are often very industry specific where custom hardware architectures, components, and various kinds of design and test tools reign supreme.  Ongoing are advances in microprocessors, FPGA's and other programmable logic chips, analog digital hybrids, digital signal processing, and supportive mathematical formulas, all of which can take an "technically unfeasible" design and suddenly not only make it feasible but also cost effective.  And if a company doesn't take advantage of advances, perhaps its competitors might.
