Stuart Spence is a principal DataPlex consultant with expertise in
in system analysis and methodologies, analog & digital processing,
a variety of computer technologies, and mechanical, electromechanical
and optical designs.
Dr. Spence co-developed the DFR 2000 Desktop Telecine (film to digital media transfer) device
that substitutes for much larger, more expensive and sensitive motion picture
post-production equipment. The Desktop Telecine can output simultaneously
multiple different video and data formats, and it can read metadata
information from the side of the film (e.g. keycode data). Dr. Spence's
innovative U-Shaped Optics
(U.S. Patent #6,891,562) saves space and make for easier field-service.
Dr. Spence helped define the standards of the new field of Rapid Prototyping, also
known as Sterolithography. As the principal system designer, he brought the
Rapid Prototyping equipment from lab curiosity to commercially viable product in
15 months, using only a handful of engineers and consultants, at times when
public's acceptance of the new Rapid Prototyping technology was in question and
at the company's Initial Public Offering. He designed the
error correction and self-calibration systems which were essential to the
Rapid Prototyping equipment's commercial success.
As Chairman and Chief Scientist of Axiom Corporation, Dr. Spence lead design
teams in development of numerous state-of-the-art video, printer and personal
computer products including electrostatic, thermal, thermal-transfer and dot-matrix
printers and peripherals. Many of the printer design features he and his
team developed became standard throughout the printer industry and are commonly
used today. Dr. Spence introduced new technology to earlier products by designing
the world's first microprocessor controlled printer, then originated the mixing of text
and graphics in the world's first "dot-addressable graphics" printer.
Dr. Spence's post-Doctoral research was in high temperature superconductors at Oxford and Stanford Universities
and had a Fulbright Travel Scholarship.
Dr. Spence is listed as sole inventor or co-inventor on at least 18 patents.
